About a month ago, I embarked on a search for good electronic dance music (EDM). Now, I want to take a little bit here and explain that techno is NOT an all encompassing term for electronic dance music. Techno is only one of a few forms. Other types include Trance, House, and Breakbeats...there are more, but I won't divulge here.
I searched far and wide, high and low for good EDM. I listened to hundreds if not thousands of samples. I scoured many different top EDM dance lists. I read reviews and recommendations, and researched the backgrounds of many different EDM artists. All to no avail. This, of course, I am counting as happening after I downloaded a couple of tracks. Those being "Call on Me" by Eric Prydz (seriously, its an awesome track, check it out) , and "Around the World/Harder, Faster, Better, Stronger" from Daft Punk's Alive 2007 album (there is definitely some awesome stuff going on in that track).
Following those downloads, my search began. Now, you'd think that after listening to so many tracks and liking none of them, that that would mean I highly dislike EDM. That, in fact, is FAR from the case. When a good EDM song plays that is exiting, pulsating, powerful, dynamic, and just plain awesome, there is hardly anything in the world that makes me wanna dance more (besides, that is, funk music. Nothing moves my body more).
To help in my search, a friend referred me to a guidebook of sorts called "Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music." The site basically gives an entire lineage of all the sub-genres of electronic music (most of which being EDM). There are hundreds of sub-genre's. It's nuts. It's like a whole other musical world that exists outside the realm of the everyday public's existence. Anyway, I listened to all the samples of all the sub-genre's. Some piqued my interest to a slight degree, but none were interesting enough to download. Thus, I am stuck. I know good EDM is out there, but it may take a while to find. So, I will keep trekking on, looking for electronic dance music that actually moves me more than annoys me.

It's a Summer Blockbuster Fisticuffs Showdown!
Okay, so its pretty obvious which two summer blockbuster movies are looking to have the most ridiculously insane visual effects. You guessed it, they are Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and J.J. Abrams reboot film Star Trek. After watching many trailers for both films I have come to the conclusion that it is the goal of these movies to out bombastify (yes i just made that word up) the other in terms of special effects. Even from watching the trailers, I don't know that I have ever seen films with such a rich density and unrelenting amount of special effects. It is my opinion, however, that Star Trek will reign king this year in the ultimate special effects showdown. In fact, I think Star Trek looks to be the most visually spectacular film ever. Now, I'm not saying its going to be the best film ever, just that it's going to really raise the bar in terms of blockbuster special effects. Well, that's my take on these blockbusters for 2009.
